Editors typically don’t like being offered surprise projects.
We thrive when we’re able to schedule manuscripts months in advance, and that’s often the case for me. I currently have projects scheduled all the way until February of next year (yay!).
However.
There are some clients we’ll bend over backward for, because the project is that good.
That’s what happened to me back at the beginning of July. A client who wrote one of my absolute favorite books contacted me about a quick project at the end of the same month.
I’m talking about Ian M. Rogers, author of Carcrash Parker and the Haven of Larpers.
The idea for the story, the writing of the story, and its planned launch came together so quickly that he didn’t have time to give me more of a heads-up, but he wanted to bring me on to help. All told, he needed only three work days from me, and I agreed without hesitation despite already being booked. I love his writing that much, and his idea was a great one.
That project releases tomorrow, September 12. It’s called The Blacksmith and the Porcupines, and it’s a fairy tale/political satire chapbook set in the same universe as Carcrash.
In addition to the cool concept, Ian also decided to donate half of the proceeds from the preorder and local launch events to support his local Democratic candidates in New Hampshire.
