When You Can’t Turn Off Those Editing Impulses, Embrace Them!

Thanks to a bit of a dip in editing work over the holiday break, I’ve actually had more time to read for pleasure as opposed for work. I’m sure most editors will tell you that it’s hard to turn that part of their brain off when reading for fun. But you know what? That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I see it as an opportunity to learn and become a better editor. For example, if I come across an interesting sentence structure in a book I’m reading, I take note of that and am able to apply it to my work the next time I encounter a particularly rough sentence in a project I’m working on. Extracurricular reading is also a great opportunity to learn new words (which I love sharing on here).

I’ve found myself enjoying moments like these instead of being irritated that I can’t shut the editing part of my brain off.

Happy reading!
