Since it’s a new year, I wanted to share the word “veneer” today. My favorite band of all time is Motion City Soundtrack, and they have this song called “Together We’ll Ring in the New Year.” There’s a lyric in the song that goes “I’m not smiling behind this fake veneer.” But do you know how to define a veneer?
According to Merriam-Webster, a veneer is a superficial or deceptively attractive appearance, display, or effect; a facade.
It can also be a thin sheet of material, or a protective or ornamental facing, but the first definition I shared is what the songwriter is referring to. It can also be used as a verb.
