The First Quarter of 2024

I realize it’s been a while since I’ve posted, but here’s what I was up to in the first quarter of 2024.

I did a copyedit on the first book in a planned fantasy series. These are my favorite projects to work on, and I’m really looking forward to books 2 and 3, which are already written and coming my way soon.

The fantasy genre is by far where I most often find myself editing, but I actually had a chance to work outside that wheelhouse twice this past quarter. I edited two thrillers for different small publishers, and I really enjoyed them. The first was set in Dallas, Texas, in the 1960s and gave me major Breaking Bad vibes. The second was set in Russia, which reminded me a lot of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series with the cold European setting and dark themes. Both projects were wonderful, and I’ve already got another thriller lined up for later this year that I’m hoping will be just as enjoyable.

Aside from those three novels, I did some work for Choice of Games, a text-based games company I freelance for. While these aren’t novels, the stories their writers come up with stand as some of my favorites by the end of each year.

I’ve also been doing lots of small projects for a repeat client of mine. Last year I edited her fantasy novella series, and she’s since been branching out and bringing her universe to other forms of media. She’s adapted her first novella into a screenplay, created Tabletop RPG folios for her various races, and even created a pitch for a television series and video games (among much more). All of this has passed through me before she goes on to the next step in the process, and it’s been fascinating for me to see the beginnings of what could become the next big entertainment property in the coming years.

That’s where my editing brain has been these last few months. Here’s to hoping the next few see the same project volume.
