Songs and Books

I love music. I’m especially fond of early-2000s emo, as that was some of the first music I discovered on my own and felt a connection to. Despite knowing so many of these songs by heart, I actually don’t like looking up lyrics to most of my favorite songs. To me, there’s something magical about interpreting what you hear, coming up with your own personal meaning of a song. Over the years, these stories stick with you and each song becomes a familiar story that you often revisit. This disconnect between the actual words written for a song and what your ears are hearing is a beautiful thing and only works because music is heard.

Books don’t work like this.

There should be no difference between the words an author writes down (or means to write down) and the words you read. Any discrepancy is a problem, an error. That’s why proofreaders are so important. Having that second pair of eyes on a manuscript is crucial so that the reader can experience exactly what words the author meant to write. The magic of books comes in your imagination, how you visualize in your head the words the author put on the page.
