Grammar Fails in Resident Evil

“In the darkness lies your fears.”

“You can’t carry anymore items.”

I’ve been replaying one of my favorite games: Resident Evil. When you launch the game, you’re met with this line: “In the darkness lies your fears.” If you try to pick up an item when your inventory is already full, you get this message: “You can’t carry anymore items.” I don’t need to tell you that my editor brain immediately saw both grammar fails.

Resident Evil originally came out in 1996, then it was remade in 2002 with updated graphics and gameplay. It was then remastered for high-definition platforms in 2015, which is the version I’m playing. Resident Evil was developed in Japan, so the text in the game had to be translated when being localized to other markets.

All these years later, these grammar flaws persist. My guess is it’s an instance of the developers wanting to remain as faithful to the original release as possible, warts and all. Considering this game is from the 1990s, I’m not bothered by stuff like this. It gives the game character. And makes me smirk.
