Don’t Get Scammed

Don’t get scammed.

More than once this year, I’ve been contacted by someone requesting editing work who I could tell was trying to scam me. Here’s how I identified that.

They were offering to pay me an outrageously high rate for very little work.

They said they would only pay once I returned the work to them.

They requested my bank info to make that payment.

Those are three red flags all editors should look out for.

If the money sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Never agree to be paid in full for your work after the fact when dealing with someone you don’t know. At the very least, request a deposit (like half up front).

Never, never, never give out your bank info unless it appears to be an established, reputable business. Do your research first. If it’s an individual you’re talking to, options like PayPal are a much safer way to get paid.

Your work is valuable. Your time is valuable. Your personal info is valuable. You are valuable.

Don’t get scammed.
